Our surf school in Fuerteventura is dedicated to helping you progress in surfing, and our surf instructors will provide personalized support during surf lessons to ensure you continue to improve.

In this tutorial, we will focus on mastering advanced take-off techniques, which are crucial for catching waves effectively and confidently. By following these clear step-by-step tips, you'll enhance your surfing experience and reach new heights in your surfing journey:

Step 1: Paddle Efficiency

  • Positioning on the Board: Find the sweet spot on your surfboard where you can paddle with ease and stability. As an intermediate surfer, you'll have a better understanding of your board's balance point.

  • Powerful Strokes: Use strong and efficient paddling strokes to generate momentum and speed. This will help you catch waves earlier and increase your chances of successful take-offs.

  • Timing and Patience: Observe the wave sets and choose the right moment to paddle for a wave. Exercise patience and wait for the ideal opportunity to catch the wave at its peak.

Step 2: Body Position

  • Ready Stance: As you paddle for a wave, position yourself correctly on the board. Keep your chest up and eyes fixed forward to maintain balance and control.

  • Timing the Pop-Up: As the wave lifts you, execute a smooth and controlled pop-up to your feet. Practice this movement to ensure a quick and fluid transition from paddling to standing.

  • Proper Foot Placement: Land on your feet with your front foot facing forward and your back foot slightly angled for optimal stability and control.

Step 3: Commitment and Confidence

  • Confidence in Take-Offs: Trust your skills and commit to the take-off with confidence. The more you believe in yourself, the smoother and more successful your take-offs will be.

  • Practice and Repetition: Continue practicing take-offs regularly to build muscle memory and improve your timing. The more you practice, the more natural the process will become.

  • Embrace Challenges: As an intermediate surfer, challenge yourself to catch waves in different conditions and from different positions. Embracing challenges will lead to significant growth in your surfing abilities.
